Co-ordinator Role

WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR?

A volunteer co-ordinator is someone that will have specific responsibility for supporting the club volunteers and ensuring they have a positive and enjoyable experience within the golf club. The role will vary from club to club but the main purpose is to ensure that volunteer management is considered within the club committees and they become a focal point for volunteering within that club.

The volunteer co-ordinator should be someone who has been involved in the club for many years and have a good knowledge of how the club works and the people in and around the club.

What can a volunteer co-ordinator do within your club?

  • Provide feedback on how they are doing their role.
  • Be a contact person for all the clubs volunteers
  • Thanking and rewarding the clubs volunteers
  • Develop the required role descriptions
  • Develop and implement an induction pack
  • Ensure communication between volunteers, members and committees
  • Mentoring and supporting younger volunteers
  • Ensure that the opportunities are accessible to all members
  • Make links to external organisations like Volunteer Centres and Universities
  • Develop the club volunteer policy

  • A strategic lead for volunteering
  • Sharing the workload across the club
  • Improved motivation of clubs volunteers
  • More volunteers wanting to be involved
  • Lack of duplication of work
  • Clearer communication within club
  • A point of contact for your NGB
  • A change in culture and attitude
  • Scared of change
  • This is the way we have always done it
  • It’s the secretary job (Work load)
  • No one wants to do it

Where should the volunteer co-ordinator fit into the club?

The role of the volunteer co-ordinator is continually evolving but evidence from organisations that have the role is that this person should ideally sit on the management committee of clubs as this shows the volunteers that the club is serious about the retention and recognition of the clubs volunteers. The chairman’s role could be developed and extended to look at legacy and volunteer management within the club.

Free Training It is recommended that any new club volunteer co-ordinator attends a training course run by the England Golf Partnership or Runningsport about the role of the volunteer co-ordinator which will be subsidised by the EGP (please contact National Volunteer Manger for more info).
