Organisers of the 2014 Ryder Cup have launched a search for 1,800 volunteers to work at the event.

They will be selected for a variety of roles connected with the Gleneagles tournament.

These include scoreboard carriers, buggy shuttle drivers and merchandise pavilion assistants.

The awards, which are organised by Active Norfolk, celebrate sporting excellence in the county.

The Unsung Hero Award recognises an individual who has dedicated their live to the promotion and welfare of sport both professionally and voluntarily.

The Golf Foundation is calling on supporters of grass roots junior golf to nominate deserving recipients for its Presidents’ Awards, held next May.

The leading golf charity is committed to changing the lives of children and young people through golf, and is in a unique position to recognise the individuals, groups and organisations who deserve special acclaim for helping youngsters to find their way in the game.

A Golf Foundation project in the Shrewbury area has been inspiring disadvantaged foster children through a team-based golf experience. The activity days were labelled “absolutely fantastic” by their foster organisation.

Golf Foundation President Colin Montgomerie greeted each winner on stage in Wentworth Club’s magnificent Ballroom. Colin supports the Foundation’s aim to make the game more accessible to children from all backgrounds and circumstances through its ‘HSBC Golf Roots’ programme, and he commended the good work of the award recipients who have all helped to significantly advance the Foundation’s cause in schools, the communities and golf clubs.

Inspirational golf volunteers Marlan Cox and Jim Pocknell have been chosen as Olympic torchbearers and will help to carry the flame through their communities on its relay round the UK.

Jim, the chairman of the Kent Golf Partnership, will carry the torch in Deal on July 19 – his birthday. “What a birthday present!” he said. Marlan, a volunteer with the Golf Foundation’s national project, HSBC Golf Roots, will take his turn in Haringey, London, on July 25. “It was a big, big surprise, I just thought ‘wow!’” he said.

Both Jim and Marlan were nominated by Sport England after their names were put forward by the England Golf Partnership (EGP). The Partnership brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf, and the Professional Golfers’ Association to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

University of Birmingham Sport ‘Golf Volunteerz’ have been named the winner of Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR) University Sports Club of the Year (SCOTY) award 2010, supported by runningsports, which recognises sports clubs that have made an outstanding contribution within their community.

The real challenge with engaging young volunteers from schools is to deploy this ready, willing and able young workforce into the golf club enviroment. Currently, there are pockets of good practice – at Tapton Park GC in Derbyshire, for example, (case study attached), Eccleston Park Golf Club in St Helens and North Wiltshire Golf Club.

England’s growing network of golf volunteers was celebrated at a tribute dinner during the County Golf Development Conference at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, on Tuesday, 23rd February.

Volunteering has traditionally conjured up images of people doing monotonous and unchallenging work out of a deep-seated sense of public duty rather than for any personal benefit.

From Carlisle to Portsmouth and Wrexham to South London, teams of children from cities all over England and Wales converged on Loughborough University on Wednesday (16th September) for a celebration of the largest ever school and community golf project in the UK.

Recently, the Golf Club Managers Association have been looking at ways of Attracting Volunteers and to gain more support and assistance from within the Club’s membership. This follow-up article describes the theories already in action, principally those being run by the England Golf Partnership.

Young Leaders supporting the development work of the Golf Foundation in the North East of England 

The Gallacher Award for the volunteer of the year was presented to Cheryl Pawley of Cookridge Hall Golf Club in Leeds. Through Cheryl’s work Cookridge Hall became the first golf club in the North East of England to achieve GolfMark accreditation.

Volunteers, junior organisers, schoolteachers, and PGA professionals who have made great strides in helping youngsters to develop as golfers and people were celebrated at Wentworth on Wednesday.

Andrew concluded: “The Loughborough experience motivated me to do really well at school and to get deeply involved with the sport leadership programme. I absolutely loved the experience and I look forward to running festivals like this in Newcastle and then taking a team of young people back to Loughborough in September to take part in the national festival. My first festival is already planned for Kenton’s family of schools, and will take place at Slaley Hall on 10th July.”

The Golf Foundation as part of it work supported the Youth Sports Trust in the delivery of a junior golf leaders workshop during the 2009 National Step into Sport Camp at Loughbrough university. 

There were 8 candidates from all over the country who decided to choose Golf as a specific bolt onto their leadership programme. They went through the new leaders Workshop and hopefully will support projects back where they are from locally. 

This year the national project featuring 16 cities in England and Wales will focus on training young volunteers to help coordinate and run the activities in their home areas, culminating in the first ever national Tri-Golf festival at Loughborough University in September, which will also be managed by the young volunteers.

The England Golf Partnership is working to encourage more young volunteers in golf. In 2008, the Golf Foundation (responsible for the development of golf in schools and the transition to golf facilities) trained over 1,000 16 to 19 year olds as either Tri-Golf activators or Junior Golf Leaders. Many of these were then involved in helping run school golf festivals and events across England as part of school sport’s agenda to provide more competition in schools.

Golf has paid tribute to the unsung heroes of the game at a special awards night held in true ‘Oscars style’ where volunteers within the sport were honoured for their work.

Robyn, aged 19 years, was honoured for her work in supporting the Bolsover partnership in schools ands clubs. Her role has taken her into seven schools and to helping organise golf festivals attracting more than 500 children. She helps deliver Tri golf within primary schools and has also worked at Golf Extreme Festivals for children at secondary school.

Danielle, aged 14 years, took on responsibility for the juniors girls at Tapton Park last year. There are now more than 20 girls in the section coming from as far afield as Sheffield and Derby. Danielle plays an active part in helping at Golf Festivals organised by the club and to supporting sessions at primary and secondary schools to encourage youngsters to take up the game. She was the first winner of the Tapton Park Young Leader Award in 2008. As well as supporting the girls golf programme, she finds time to play top level golf and has been named as Captain of the Derbyshire County Girls Team for 2009.

Kim started coaching at local schools netball in 2002 and after attending a Golf Foundation Leaders Workshop decided to start coaching golf within primary and now secondary schools. She also works with local community groups such as Millwall Football Club, Brownie packs and disability groups. She coordinates the Golf Foundation Inner City golf programme for South London. Kim continues to run the junior section at the Aquarius Golf Club which has also been awarded Golf Mark and supports her father, the professional at the club, in weekend coaching sessions. She was instrumental in preparing and winning an Awards for all Bid to introduce a 12 week ‘Get into Golf’ course aimed at girls in secondary schools. Kim has been credited with raising the profile of golf throughout schools in her area so that is now one of the best promoted sports.

Dave first got involved with the junior section at Boston Golf Club in 2006 which has now risen to more than 50 members. During this period he has ensured the club achieved GolfMark status, including writing the Child Protection policy and a junior handbook. He has introduced a junior handicap scheme, a junior club championship and junior matches. He has trained as a level 1 PGA coach and now with the Club professional regularly helps out at club coaching sessions every weekend. He has also worked at getting golf into local schools by introducing Tri Golf programmes and tournaments.

Di has been involved in all aspects of Wiltshire and Ladies Girls golf for more than a decade. She was County Captain in 2003-4 and then junior organiser for Wiltshire County Ladies Golf Association 2005-7. In that period she set up a girls' golf development programme which has produced a steady stream of excellent young players. She has ensured that every club in Wiltshire has a girls' junior organiser. She has represented the county on the EWGA SW and Regional Committee and was England team Manager for the Home Internationals in 2006. She played an important role in the formation of the Wiltshire County Golf Partnership which she has chaired for the past two years.

This outstanding achievement award recognises an extraordinary contribution to golf volunteering over a substantial period of time. Jim has been involved in club and County Golf in Kent for more than 24 years. He served on the Kent County Union for 21 years including running the junior and Colts sections. He was appointed County Development Officer (volunteer post) in 2005 and in 2006 was appointed Chair of the Kent County Golf Partnership. He has held numerous volunteering roles at Royal Blackheath Golf Club and Gillingham Golf Club.

The emotionally charged 2006 Ryder Cup at The K Club saw The European Team complete a record third successive victory, and a fifth win in six matches. It is often claimed that modern safeguarding measures deter volunteers from coming forward to help out with junior sport. However, according to a report commissioned by sportscotland, Children 1st and the Scottish Sports Association into the effect of child protection on volunteering, support for child protection policies and procedures is high amongst the voluntary sector.
