As the UK’s volunteers are celebrated this week, UK Sport has highlighted the sporting opportunities being brought to the UK via their National Lottery funded World Class Events Programme in the build up to the London 2012 Games.
Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June 2010) is an annual event which celebrates the contribution of the millions of volunteers across the UK and aims to inspire others to get involved. And with just over two years to go before the start of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, people are being encouraged to get involved by volunteering at events already confirmed as taking place across the nation ahead of the Games.
UK Sport, the UK’s High Performance Sports Agency, is aiming to bring 60 major sporting events to the UK before the beginning of the Games, providing more than 10,000 volunteering opportunities. With events such as the ITU World Championship Series Triathlon taking place in Hyde Park, the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships taking place in Birmingham and the World Laser Championships hosted by Scotland (Largs) this year, there has never been a better opportunity to get involved.
Simon Morton, Head of Events at UK Sport, said: “The events we are hosting across the UK ahead of the London 2012 Games provide people with the opportunity to watch world class sporting action, featuring Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic stars and hopefuls, on their doorstep but also to get involved in the exciting build up to the Games through volunteering.” for more info pleas goto http://www.uksport.gov.uk/news/volunteers-week-highlights-sporting-opportunities-030610
